COPPA Compliance
Dear Parents of OJUSD school-aged children under the age of 13,
In order for the Oakdale Joint Unified School District to continue to be able to provide your student with the most effective web-based tools and applications for learning, our district utilizes several computer software applications and web-based services, not operated by Oakdale Joint Unified School District, but by third parties. This includes but is not limited to the creation of Google Accounts.
In order for our students to use these third party services, certain personal identifying information, generally the student’s name and email address, must be provided to the services’ web site operator. Under federal law entitled the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), these third party service providers must provide parental notification and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. The law permits school districts such as ours to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to the web site operator. Parents of OJUSD students under the age of 13 may opt out of such third party services.
- For more information on please visit COPPA.
It should be noted as OJUSD moves forward in providing your child a relevant education providing integrated technology and 21st Century Learning Skills, that requesting removal from third party services such as those provided by Google will prove problematic particularly for any classes utilizing Chromebook labs for instructional purpose.
Please print the "COPPA Compliance Form," complete it and fax it to (209) 847-0155, or mail to the address below ONLY IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD REMOVED FROM THIRD PARTY SERVICES INCLUDING CHROMEBOOK LAB PARTICIPATION.
